RICHARD BURTON
Richard Burton, CBE, de nombre real Richard Walter Jenkins (Pontrhydyfen, cerca del puerto de Talbot, Gales, 10 de noviembre de 1925 – Céligny, Suiza, 5 de agosto de 1984) fue un actor británico.
Primeros años
Richard Walter Jenkins nació en la aldea de Pontrhydyfen (Gales) y creció en pobreza con muchos de sus hermanos y hermanas. Criado como presbiteriano, con la ayuda de su profesor vocacional, Philip H. Burton (quien lo adoptó legalmente), sobresalió desde muy temprano en producciones teatrales de la escuela. Fue en este tiempo cuando comenzó a desarrollar la distintiva voz de discurso que se convertiría en su sello, siendo animado por Philip (quien trabajaba también como productor de radio de la BBC) a perder su acento galés. Hasta el día de hoy, muchos estudiantes de actuación tratan de imitar el estilo de Burton para la locución, alabado por los críticos de todo el mundo.
Hay un mito extendido, quizá animado o aún auspiciado por algunos de los miembros de su familia de clase media: que Richard Burton «ganó una beca para Oxford a los dieciséis años», pero que la rechazó después de seis meses. Los hechos, según lo registrado por el mismo Burton en su autobiografía y en el libro Richard y Philip, que él co-escribió, son los siguientes: a la edad de dieciséis años, lo forzaron a salir de la escuela y encontrar trabajo como vendedor. Su profesor anterior, Philip Burton, reconociendo su talento, lo adoptó y le permitió volver a la escuela. En 1943, a los dieciocho años, se le permitió a Richard Burton (quien había tomado el apellido de su profesor) entrar en la Universidad de Exeter durante sólo seis meses. Después se alistó en el ejército para participar en la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Inicios
En la década de 1940 y los comienzos de los años 50 Burton trabajó en el teatro y en el cine del Reino Unido. Antes de servir en la guerra con la Royal Air Force (Real Fuerza Aérea) había hecho su debut profesional en Liverpool, apareciendo en una obra llamada Rest of the Druid (El descanso del druida), pero su carrera fue interrumpida por su reclutamiento en 1944.
Mientras realizaba su primera película, The Last Days of Dolwyn en 1947, conoció a su futura esposa, la joven actriz Sybil Williams, con la que se casó en febrero de 1949. Tuvieron dos hijos, pero se divorciarían en 1963 a raíz del escandaloso idilio de él con Elizabeth Taylor.
En el año de su unión con Sybil, Burton apareció en una producción altamente acertada llamada The Lady’s Not For Burning, junto a sir John Gielgud.
Posteriormente estuvo casado dos veces con la misma persona y amor de su vida, Elizabeth Taylor, con la que vivió una tormentosa relación con violentas peleas. Sin embargo, obsequió a Liz con múltiples joyas, como la Perla Peregrina.
Hollywood
En 1952, Burton pasó con éxito la transición a estrella de Hollywood, apareciendo en My Cousin Rachel junto a Olivia de Havilland. Al año siguiente rodó La túnica sagrada con Jean Simmons, y después insistió en papeles históricos al encarnar a Alejandro Magno en Alejandro el Grande, dirigido por Robert Rossen.
En 1954, interpretó su papel de radio más famoso, como el narrador de la producción original de Dylan Thomas Under Milk Wood, un papel que representaría veinte años después en su adaptación al cine.
Entre sus películas más conocidas destacan Las lluvias de Ranchipur, Mirando hacia atrás con ira (dirigida por Tony Richardson), El día más largo, La noche de la iguana (dirigida por John Huston), El espía que surgió del frío, Ana de los mil días (con Geneviève Bujold, por la que ambos fueron nominados al Óscar de la Academia), Equus (dirigida por Sidney Lumet) y tres películas con su esposa Liz Taylor: Cleopatra, The Sandpiper (Castillos en la arena, 1965) y Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (¿Quién teme a Virginia Woolf?).
En 1969 rodó una atrevida tragicomedia de temática gay: La escalera, dirigida por Stanley Donen. Con Rex Harrison, interpretó a una pareja de peluqueros homosexuales, envueltos en situaciones desagradables al ser acusados de escándalo a la moral. Esta película no pudo estrenarse en España hasta 1976 y tuvo limitada difusión, en parte entorpecida por la viuda de Burton; en 2011 fue recuperada.1
Tras algunas producciones de menor relieve (como una secuela de El exorcista), en 1983 encarnó a Richard Wagner en una lujosa serie televisiva, con Vanessa Redgrave y otras figuras. Finalmente, poco antes de morir, interpretó al personaje de O’Brien en la película británica 1984, dirigida por Michael Radford y basada en la novela homónima del escritor George Orwell.
Fue nominado siete veces para los Premios de la Academia, pero no ganó ninguno.
Junto a Elizabeth Taylor, Steve McQueen y a Sharon Tate (esta última asesinada), estuvo en la lista de celebridades a asesinar por el clan de Charles Manson. De dicha lista, no sobrevive ninguno después de la muerte natural de Liz Taylor en marzo de 2011.
En 2013 recibe su Estrella en el Paseo de la Fama de Hollywood.2

Early life
Richard Walter Jenkins was born in the village of Pontrhydyfen ( Wales ) and grew up in poverty with many of his brothers and sisters. Raised as a Presbyterian , with the help of his vocational teacher, Philip H. Burton (who legally adopted him) stood very early in school theater productions. It was at this time that he began to develop the distinctive speaking voice that would become his hallmark, being animated by Philip (who also worked as a radio producer for the BBC ) to lose his accent Welsh . Beginnings

Hollywood
In 1952 , Burton successfully passed the star transition to Hollywood , appearing in My Cousin Rachel by Olivia de Havilland . The following year he filmed The Robe with Jean Simmons , and then insisted on historical roles to portray Alexander in Alexander the Great , directed by Robert Rossen .
In 1954 , he played his most famous radio role, as the narrator in the original production of Dylan Thomas Under Milk Wood , a role that would represent twenty years later in the film adaptation.
Among his best known films include rains Ranchipur , Look Back in Anger (directed by Tony Richardson ), The Longest Day , The Night of the Iguana (dir. John Huston ), The Spy Who Came in from the cold, Anne of the thousand days (with Geneviève Bujold , for which both were nominated for Academy Award), Equus (directed by Sidney Lumet ) and three movies with his wife Liz Taylor: Cleopatra , The Sandpiper (The Sandpiper, 1965) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?).
In 1969 he shot a bold tragicomedy themed gay : Ladder, directed by Stanley Donen . With Rex Harrison , he played a gay couple hairdressers, unpleasant to be involved in scandal accused of moral situations. This film was not released in Spain until 1976 and had limited circulation, partly hampered by the widow of Burton; in 2011 was recovered.
After some minor productions relief (as a sequel to The Exorcist), in 1983 he played Richard Wagner in a lavish TV series, with Vanessa Redgrave and other figures. Finally, shortly before his death, he played the character of O’Brien in the British film 1984 , directed by Michael Radford and based on the novel of the writer George Orwell .
He was nominated seven times for Academy Awards , but won none.
Along with Elizabeth Taylor , Steve McQueen and Sharon Tate (the latter killed ), was in the list of celebrities to murder by the family of Charles Manson . From this list, does not survive none after the natural death of Liz Taylor in March 2011 .
In 2013 received his star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood .
