Thomas Andrews, Jr. (7 de febrero de 1873 – 15 de abril de 1912) fue un empresario e ingeniero naval británico. Fue el director y jefe del departamento de construcción de barcos de la compañía Harland & Wolff en Belfast, Irlanda del Norte. Andrews fue el encargado del planeamiento y de la construcción del famoso transatlántico RMS Titanic, además de sus dos hermanos, propiedad de la compañía White Star Line: el RMS Olympic y el HMHS Britannic. Thomas Andrews iba a bordo del Titanic durante el viaje inaugural cuando chocó contra un iceberg el 14 de abril de 1912, y fue una de las 1.520 personas que perdieron la vida en el hundimiento del buque.

Biografía

Primeros años

Andrews nació en la Ardara House en Comber, en el Condado de Down, Irlanda del Norte. Era hijo de Thomas Andrews, político británico, y de Eliza Pirrie, y tenía un hermano llamado John Miller Andrews. Thomas vivió con su familia en Ardara, Comber. En 1884, Andrews empezó sus estudios en la Royal Belfast Academical Institution donde continuó hasta 1889, cuando a los dieciséis años comenzó un aprendizaje especial en la compañía de construcción marítima Harland & Wolff donde su tío William Pirrie era, en parte, dueño de la empresa.

En Harland & Wolff, Andrews empezó su aprendizaje con tres meses como carpintero, para luego trabajar en la ebanistería durante un mes y luego pasar a trabajar en los barcos durante dos meses.

Los últimos dieciocho meses de su aprendizaje de cinco años, los pasó en la oficina de dibujo. En 1901, Andrews, después de haber trabajado en infinidad de departamentos de la empresa, se convirtió en el director de las obras de construcción. Aquel mismo año también se hizo miembro de la Institución de Arquitectos Navales, una organización británica de constructores de buques.

En 1907, Andrews es nombrado director general y jefe del departamento de dibujo en Harland and Wolff. Durante sus largos años de aprendizaje, estudios y trabajo, Andrews se había hecho querido en la empresa y entre los empleados del astillero.

El 24 de junio de 1908, se casó con Helen Reilly Barbour, con quien tuvo una hija llamada Elizabeth Law Barber Andrews, en 1910.

La pareja vivió en “Dunallan” en la Windsow Avenue en Belfast. Se sabe también, que Andrews llevó una noche a Helen a conocer al RMS Titanic poco antes del nacimiento de Elizabeth.

Luego de la muerte de Thomas, Helen se casó nuevamente, con Henry Peirson Harland (de la familia de Harland & Wolff) y murió el 22 de agosto de 1966 en Irlanda del Norte.

Thomas Andrews, Jr. ( February 7 of 1873 – April 15 of 1912 ) was a businessman and engineer naval British . He was the director and department head shipbuilding company Harland & Wolff in Belfast , Northern Ireland . Andrews was in charge of the planning and construction of the famous ocean liner RMS Titanic , along with her two brothers, owned by the company White Star Line : the RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic . Thomas Andrews was aboard the Titanic during the maiden voyage when it struck an iceberg on 14 April 1912, and was one of the 1,520 people who lost their lives in the sinking of the ship.

Andrews was born in Ardara House in Comber in County Down , Northern Ireland . He was the son of Thomas Andrews, British politician, and Eliza Pirrie, and had a brother named John Miller Andrews . Thomas lived with his family in Ardara , Comber. In 1884 , Andrews began his studies at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution where he continued until 1889 , when at sixteen began a special learning company offshore construction Harland & Wolff where his uncle William Pirrie was partly own the company .

Harland and Wolff

In Harland & Wolff, Andrews began his apprenticeship as a carpenter three months, then work on the cabinetry for a month and then go to work on ships for two months.

The last eighteen months of his apprenticeship of five years spent in the drawing office. In 1901 , Andrews, having worked in countless departments of the company, became the director of construction. That same year a member of the Institution of Naval Architects, a British organization shipbuilders are also made.

In 1907 , Andrews was named managing director and head of the department of Harland and Wolff drawing. During his long years of learning, study and work, Andrews had made dear in the company and among employees of the shipyard.

On June 24th of 1908 , he married Helen Reilly Barbour, with whom he had a daughter named Elizabeth Law Barber Andrews in 1910 .

The couple lived in “Dunallan” on Windsow Avenue in Belfast. It is also known that Andrews Helen took one night to meet the RMS Titanic shortly before the birth of Elizabeth.
