El inglés desciende del idioma que hablaron las tribus germánicas que migraron desde las costas del Mard en lo que actualmente son los Países Bajos, el norte de Alemania (y parte de Dinamarca) hacia las islas británicas, a un territorio de la mismas se acabaría denominando Inglaterra (Englaland ‘tierra de los anglos’).
