REY ARTURO

El Rey Arturo (en galés y en inglés: Arthur) (otros nombres:Arturo de Bretaña, Arturo del Reino Unido, Arthur of Britain) es un destacado personaje de la literatura europea, especialmente inglesa y francesa, donde aparece representado como el monarca ideal, tanto en la guerra como en la paz. Según algunos textos medievales tardíos, Arturo fue un caudillo britano que dirigió la defensa de Gran Bretaña frente a los invasores sajones a comienzos del siglo VI. Su historia pertenece principalmente a la leyenda y a la literatura, aunque se discute si Arturo, o un personaje similar en el que se habría basado la leyenda, ha existido realmente.

Las primeras referencias a Arturo se encuentran en las literaturas célticas, en poemas galeses como Y Gododdin. El primer relato de la vida del personaje se encuentra en la Historia Regum Britanniae, de Geoffrey de Monmouth, quien configuró los rasgos principales de su leyenda. Monmouth presenta a Arturo como un rey de Gran Bretaña que derrotó a los sajones y estableció un imperio en las islas Británicas. En su relato aparecen figuras como el padre de Arturo, Uther Pendragon y su consejero, el mago Merlín, y elementos como la espada Excalibur; se menciona también el nacimiento de Arturo en Tintagel, así como su batalla final contra Mordred en Camlann y su retiro posterior a la isla de Ávalon junto al Hada Morgana, alumna de Merlín.

A partir del siglo XII, Arturo fue el personaje central de las leyendas conocido como materia de Bretaña, apareciendo en numerosos romances en francés. Chrétien de Troyes añadió otros elementos esenciales a su leyenda, entre ellos la figura de Lanzarote del Lago y la relación con el Santo Grial. Después de la Edad Media la literatura artúrica experimentó un cierto declive, pero resurgió durante el siglo XIX y continúa viva a comienzos del siglo XXI, tanto en la literatura como en otros muchos medios. De entre todas las versiones del relato, la más leída de entre las antiguas es La muerte de Arturo de Thomas Malory, que es, en palabras de L. D. Benson, la única obra literaria inglesa escrita entre Chaucer y Shakespeare, que aún hoy en día es leída con renovado fervor y placer.² Esta obra ha sido también una de las más influyentes en las adaptaciones cinematográficas.

King Arthur (in Welsh and English : Arthur) (other names: Arthur of Brittany, UK Arthur, Arthur of Britain) is a prominent character of, especially English and French European literature, which is represented as the monarch perfect both in war and in peace. According to some texts late medieval, Arturo was a caudillo Briton who led the defense of Britain against invading Saxons in the early sixth century . His story belongs mainly to the legend and literature, although it is discussed whether Arthur, or a similar character that would have been based legend really existed.

After medieval Arthurian literature experienced some decline, but revived during the nineteenth century and is still alive at the beginning of XXI century, both in literature and in many other media. Of all the versions of the story, the most widely read among the oldest is The Death of Arthur of Thomas Malory , that is, in the words of LD Benson, the only English literary works written between Chaucer and Shakespeare , which even today is read with renewed fervor and pleasure. This work has also been one of the most influential film adaptations.
