Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins, CBE (Margam, 31 de diciembre de 1937), es un actor galés de cine, teatro y televisión,¹ ² ³ ⁴ además de compositor.

Es muy conocido por su interpretación del asesino en serie Dr. Hannibal Lecter en The Silence of the Lambs, su secuela Hannibal y su precuela Dragón Rojo.

Entre otras de sus películas notables están El hombre elefante, Drácula, de Bram Stoker, Leyendas de pasión, Lo que queda del día, Howards End, La máscara del Zorro, The World’s Fastest Indian, Hearts in Atlantis, Nixon y Fracture entre otras. Hopkins nació y creció en Gales, en abril del año 2000 adquirió, además, la ciudadanía estadounidense y es reconocido como unos de los mejores actores vivos.

Durante su carrera ha ganado varios premios como el Óscar, el Emmy, el Globo de Oro y el BAFTA, entre otros. En su carrera se ha encontrado varias veces con el también actor británico Gary Oldman; con Hopkins haciendo de secundario en la interpretación más famosa de Gary Oldman Drácula, de Bram Stoker y con Oldman haciendo de secundario en la película más famosa de Hopkins Hannibal; incluso han llegado a compartir un premio de Teatro Británico.

En 2012 da vida al director de suspenso Alfred Hitchcock en la película Hitchcock del director Sacha Gervasi.⁵

Biografía

Primeros años

Hopkins nació en Margam, Port Talbot, Gales, hijo de Muriel Anne y Richard Arthur Hopkins, un panadero.⁶ Su madre es pariente lejana del poeta irlandés William Butler Yeats.⁶

Sus épocas de escuela fueron poco productivas. Solitario y con dislexia, se dio cuenta de que podría dedicarse a algún arte, como la pintura, el dibujo o el piano. En 1949, para infundirle alguna disciplina, sus padres insistieron para que asistiera a Jones’ West Monmouth Boys’ School en Pontypool, Gales. Permaneció allí por 5 períodos y luego asistió al Cowbridge Grammar School en Cowbridge, Gales.

Fue influenciado y animado por el actor galés Richard Burton, para que comenzara su carrera en la actuación. Se habían conocido brevemente a los 15 años de edad. Al final, Hopkins se matriculó en un colegio de música y drama galés en Cardiff, del que se graduó en 1957. Después de un período de 2 años en el ejército, se trasladó a Londres, donde se continuó formando en Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Reconocimientos

Después de una serie de películas en las que interpretó diversos papeles en los años setenta y ochenta, su carrera se disparó con su papel de Hannibal Lecter, un peligroso e intelectual criminal en la película The Silence of the Lambs, por la cual obtuvo el premio Óscar al mejor actor.

Sir Anthony Hopkins confiere a sus personajes un perfil muy distintivo, profundo y psicológico muy elaborado y que los hace muy creíbles. Célebre es su actuación junto a Emma Thompson en Lo que queda del día donde interpreta a un primer Mayordomo en la mansión de un político inglés. Por esta actuación fue nominado para un Óscar al mejor Actor.

En Amistad representa notablemente al ex-presidente John Quincy Adams en rol de abogado penalista que defiende la causa de un grupo de esclavos acusados de motín y homicidio, en el barco de trata de esclavos Amistad, el film está basado en hechos reales.

Pero a Hopkins no se le puede encasillar ni definir por estos logros, ya que ha alternado trabajos teatrales y cinematográficos a lo largo de su carrera; nuevamente ha sido aclamado por la crítica por sus interpretaciones en Drácula, de Bram Stoker (1992, Francis Ford Coppola), Howards End (1992, James Ivory), Lo que queda del día (1993, J. Ivory) -por el que fue nominado nuevamente para el Oscar al mejor actor-, Tierras de penumbra (1993, Richard Attenborough), o Leyendas de pasión (1994, Edward Zwick).

En 1992 fue nombrado Sir por la reina Isabel II.

Biography

Early life

Hopkins was born in Margam , Port Talbot , Wales , the son of Muriel Anne and Richard Arthur Hopkins, a baker. His mother is a distant relative of the Irish poet William Butler Yeats .

He was influenced and encouraged by the Welsh actor Richard Burton , to begin his acting career. They had met briefly at 15 years of age. In the end, Hopkins enrolled at a college of music and Welsh drama in Cardiff, from which he graduated in 1957. After a period of 2 years in the Army, he moved to London where he continued forming Royal Academy of Dramatic Art .

Work as an actor

His first starring roles were Coriolanus ( 1971 ) and Macbeth ( 1972 ). His debut on Broadway in 1975 , in Equus, earned him several awards. In film, he began playing Richard the Lionheart in The Lion in Winter ( 1968 ) of Anthony Harvey .
