Sir Thomas John Woodward, OBE (Treforest, Glamorganshire, 7 de junio de 1940), conocido por su nombre artístico de Tom Jones, es un cantante galés. Ha vendido más de 100 millones de discos en todo el mundo.1
Biografía y carrera
Hijo del minero Thomas Woodward y de Freda Jones, Jones descubrió su pasión durante la infancia. Solía cantar en fiestas familiares, matrimonios y participaba del coro de la escuela. Padeció de tuberculosis y estuvo en reposo casi un año; fue un tiempo muy crítico en el cual él trataba de superarse a sí mismo así como de escuchar música y dibujar. A los 17 años se casó con Linda Trenchard, de cuya unión nació su hijo Mark. Jones salió de la escuela con malas calificaciones y durante ese periodo debió trabajar como vendedor puerta a puerta y trabajador de construcción.
En el apogeo de su carrera tuvo varios affairs amorosos entre los que se destaca su relación con Marjorie Wallace (una destituida Miss Mundo coronada en 1973) y una aventura con Cassandra Peterson.
Inicios en los años 60

Jones se hizo conocido en la década de 1960 por su gran voz, extravagante estilo y por su sensualidad, elementos que han sido claves en su imagen como artista.
Su carrera se inició en 1963 cuando era vocalista del grupo Tommy Scott & The Senators, una banda beat local de aquel entonces que ganó reputación principalmente en Gales del Sur, pese a que no tuvo un gran éxito. Ese mismo año su grupo intentó conseguir éxito de la mano del productor Joe Meek quien trató de convencer a varias compañías discográficas de su potencial artístico sin mucho éxito. El grupo siguió tocando en clubes nocturnos hasta que un día Gordon Mills vio en Tom Jones un gran potencial y lo llevó a Londres donde comenzó a gestar su carrera. Gordon Mills se convirtió en su mánager y decidido a lograr la consolidación del joven artista lo rebautizó bajo el nombre artístico de Tom Jones en honor al personaje literario.
El estilo de Tom Jones, apodado El Tigre de Gales, cautivaba a muchos por su voz cálida y al mismo tiempo muy caudalosa, algo muy poco frecuente en un cantante popular. Su primer sencillo fue grabado para la casa discográfica Decca en 1964 con la canción “Fiebre intermitente” (“Chills And Fever”); no tuvo mucho interés, pero el éxito llegó en 1965 con la canción “It’s Not Unusual”. Ese mismo año, grabó la canción para la película de James Bond titulada Thunderball. El reconocimiento llegó con el premio Grammy por Mejor artista nuevo. En 1966, su popularidad empiezó a consolidarse a través de una propuesta madura, transformándose en un gran crooner con canciones como “Green Green Grass of Home”, “What’s New Pussycat”, “Help Yourself” y especialmente “Delilah”.
Decadencia en los 70
Entre 1969 y 1971, Tom Jones tuvo un exitoso programa de variedades para la televisión titulado This Is Tom Jones el cual fue exhibido en cadenas como ABC en Estados Unidos o ITV en el Reino Unido. Pero en la década de 1970, su carrera tuvo una lenta decadencia; se supone que porque su estilo pasaba de moda.
Repunte en los años 80
El 29 de julio de 1986 murió su mánager, Gordon Mills, y su hijo Mark llegó a administrar su carrera. Mark logró relanzar su carrera a partir de 1987 cuando Tom Jones volvió a las listas de popularidad con la canción “A Boy From Nowhere”. Luego grabó una versión de la canción “Kiss” -popularizada por Prince– junto a The Art of Noise que fue un éxito instantáneo.
En 1993 firma un contrato con la casa discográfica Interscope Records que edita el álbum The Lead And How to Swing It, un éxito inmediato que conquistó a audiencias más jóvenes. En 1998, actuó junto a Robbie Williams en los Brit Awards cantando una selección de canciones de la banda sonora de la película The Full Monty.
Al año siguiente graba su disco de duetos titulado Reload en el cual destaca “Burning Down The House” junto a la banda The Cardigans, canción del grupo de los 80 Talking Heads, cuyo vídeo musical se caracterizó por su gran realización e innovador concepto. Biography and Career
Son of mining and Freda Thomas Jones Woodward, Jones discovered his passion for children. He used to sing at family parties, weddings and participated in the school choir. Suffered from tuberculosis and was resting almost a year; was a very critical time in which he tried to surpass himself and listening to music and drawing. At 17 he married Linda Trenchard, whose union was born his son Mark. Jones left school with poor grades and during that period had to work as door to door salesman and construction worker.
At the height of his career he had several love affairs among which stands out his relationship with Marjorie Wallace (one dismissed Miss World crowned in 1973 ) and an affair with Cassandra Peterson .

Rebound in the 80s
On July 29 of 1986 died his manager, Gordon Mills, and son Mark came to manage your career. Mark managed to relaunch his career after 1987 when Tom Jones returned to the charts with the song “A Boy From Nowhere”. Then he recorded a version of the song “Kiss”, made famous by Prince – along with The Art of Noise was an instant hit.
In 1993 signed a contract with record label Interscope Records which released the album The Lead And How to Swing It, which won immediate success to younger audiences.
