Sir Henry Morton Stanley (Denbigh, Gales, 28 de enero de 1841 – Londres, Reino Unido 10 de mayo de 1904; nacido John Rowlands) fue un explorador y periodista galés nacionalizado estadounidense, famoso por sus expediciones a la entonces misteriosa África Central, en una de las cuales encontró al desaparecido David Livingstone.

Primeros años de vida y su traslado a Estados Unidos

Stanley nació en Denbigh, País de Gales, cuando su madre, Elizabeth Parry, tenía 19 años. Según su certificado de nacimiento era hijo ilegítimo y el estigma de la ilegitimidad supuso una pesada carga para él, durante toda su vida. Tuvo una infancia llena de maltratos y de lucha por su existencia, fue criado por su abuelo hasta la edad de cinco años. Cuando éste murió, vivió durante un corto período con algunos primos y sobrinos maternos, pero poco después fue enviado a St. Asaph Union Workhouse, institución de acogida para pobres, donde el hacinamiento y la falta de control daban lugar a frecuentes abusos de los chicos mayores y de los rectores de la institución. Cuando tenía diez años, su madre y dos hermanos permanecieron durante un tiempo en esta institución, sin que Stanley supieran quiénes eran. Allí permaneció hasta los quince años, momento en que huye de la institución y marcha a su aldea natal. Aquí completa una educación elemental y colabora como ayudante de profesor en una escuela nacional. En 1859, es contratado en el puerto de Liverpool, en el barco Windermeer, con rumbo a Nueva Orleans. En el barco también sufre una dura travesía, que le lleva a saltar a tierra en cuanto avistan Nueva Orleans, sin esperar a cobrar sus jornales pendientes.

En Nueva Orleans, tomó el apellido Stanley al ser adoptado por un comerciante norteamericano, participó en la Guerra Civil Americana. Al finalizar la guerra, comenzó su carrera como periodista, escribiendo como corresponsal desde el oeste americano.

En 1868 acompañó como cronista a las tropas británicas a Abisinia, en la expedición que realizaban los ingleses contra el Negus Teodoro II de Etiopía, más tarde emprendió expediciones al Imperio Otomano, visitando Grecia, Esmirna, Beirut y Alejandría; también es enviado a España, donde presencia la guerra carlista y asiste a la caída de la reina Isabel II y aprende un perfecto español.¹

Sir Henry Morton Stanley (Denbigh, Wales , January 28 of 1841 – London , UK May 10 of 1904 , born John Rowlands) was an explorer and journalist Welsh nationalized American , famous for his expeditions to the then mysterious Central Africa , in one of which found the missing David Livingstone .

Early life and its transfer to the United States

Stanley was born in Denbigh , Wales, when his mother, Elizabeth Parry, was 19. According to his birth certificate was illegitimate and stigma of illegitimacy it was a burden to him throughout his life. He had a childhood of abuse and struggle for existence, he was raised by his grandfather until the age of five years. When he died, he lived for a short time with some cousins and maternal nephews, but soon after was sent to St. Asaph Union Workhouse, host institution for the poor, where overcrowding and lack of control resulted in frequent abuse of boys older and governing of the institution. When he was ten, his mother and two brothers remained for a time in this institution without Stanley knew who they were. He remained there until the age of fifteen, when he flees the institution and goes to his native village. Here complete an elementary education and works as an assistant teacher in a national school. In 1859 , he was hired at the port of Liverpool , in the Windermeer ship bound for New Orleans . The ship also suffers a hard journey, which takes you to jump ashore as sighted New Orleans, without waiting to collect their outstanding wages.

In New Orleans, Stanley took the surname being adopted by an American dealer, participated in the American Civil War . After the war, he began his career as a journalist, writing as a correspondent from the American West. In 1868 as a reporter accompanied the British troops to Abyssinia , in the expedition that carried the English against the Negus Theodore II of Ethiopia later undertook expeditions to the Ottoman Empire , visiting Greece , Izmir , Beirut and Alexandria ; also sent to Spain , where he witnesses the Carlist war and attends the fall of Queen Elizabeth II and learn perfect Spanish .
