Wales (in Welsh : Cymru, in English : Wales) is a constituent country of the United Kingdom . It is located west of the island of Great Britain , where it borders on the east by England and the seas west of Ireland and Celtic the Atlantic . It has a total population of three million people and a country is bilingual , whose official languages are Welsh and English.
It is one of the Celtic nations and possesses a distinct cultural identity that was formed after the withdrawal of the Romans from Britain. The defeat of Llewelyn by Edward I in the thirteenth century completed the conquest anglonormanda Wales and marked the beginning of centuries of English occupation. The country was incorporated into England by the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284 and later by the Act of Union of 1536 , creating the legal entity known today as England and Wales . In the nineteenth century developed a local policy. In 1955 Cardiff was named the capital and in 1999 created the National Assembly for Wales , which serves domestic affairs. His head of government is the Chief Minister (First Minister).
The capital and largest city is Cardiff (Welsh: Caerdydd), with 320,000 inhabitants. For a time was the world’s largest coal port and, for a few years before the First World War , had a more intense traffic London or Liverpool . Two thirds of the population live in South Wales , with another rally in western North Wales . Since the nineteenth century, the country has acquired a reputation of folk place, which is due in part to the revival of the tradition eisteddfod . After London, Cardiff is the largest media center in the UK.
In 1216 Llywelyn the Great founded the Principality of Wales . In the early fifteenth century , ie a hundred years after the English conquest, Owain Glyndwr briefly restored independence defining the modern character of the country. The British Royal Family has been granted the title of Prince of Wales, heir to the throne, but Prince has nothing to do with the country’s ruler.
