Newport (en galés: Casnewydd) es una ciudad y autoridad unitaria situada en el sureste de Gales (Reino Unido),¹ ² a 12 kilométros al este de la capital, Cardiff. Newport tiene su propio autoridad unitaria, en el condado tradicional de Monmouthshire y el condado preservado de Gwent. Está al lado del río Usk, que desemboca al canal de Bristol después de Newport. Nombre

Historia

Antes la Revolución Industrial

La primera localidad en Newport fue Caerleon en 75, una localidad militaria romana. Newport (in Welsh : Casnewydd) is a city and unitary authority situated in the southeast of Wales ( UK ), 12 kilometers east of the capital, Cardiff . Newport has its own unitary authority , in the traditional county of Monmouthshire and the preserved county of Gwent . It is beside the River Usk , which flows into the Bristol Channel after Newport. With 116,143 inhabitants (census 2001 ), Newport is the third largest city in Wales after Cardiff and Swansea , and the largest town of Gwent. The unitary authority has a population of 140,200 in its entirety, the seventh in Wales. Newport has traditionally been a coal port near the estuary of the River Severn .

On March 14 of 2002 Newport was given city status to celebrate the 50th year of the rule of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom

Name

Its name translates as Puerto Nuevo. Although Newport has a port, port village market meant language Old English . The Welsh name, Casnewydd means >> << New Castle, and its official name, Casnewydd-ar-Wysg means << to New Castle Usk >> side.

Before the Industrial Revolution
