Colonización
La conquista romana comenzó en Gales en 48. Dos de las mayores tribus británicas, los siluros y los ordovicos, se resistieron al dominio romano durante algunos años, pero finalmente los ordovicos fueron sometidos en 79. Las tribus británicas de la época prerromana ocupaban el territorio actual de Gales, pero también partes de Inglaterra y el sur de Escocia, en lo que se convertiría la provincia romana de Britania hasta la retirada de las legiones romanas a comienzos del siglo V.12
En Gales del Sur se formó un cordón de fuertes romanos, asegurando un control territorial por lo menos hasta Carmarthen, extrayendo asimismo oro de las minas de Dolaucothi en Carmarthenshire. Los romanos también construyeron un fuerte para sus legiones en Caerleon (Isca Augusta), cuyo anfiteatro se encuentra bien preservado, lo mismo que ciudades como Venta Silurum, con estructuras en buen estado de conservación.
Como se refleja en el cuento medieval Breuddwyd Macsen Wledig (El sueño de Macsen Wleding), los romanos también incursionaron en la zona septentrional del país. Según su trama Magno Máximo (Macsen Wledig), uno de los últimos emperadores romanos de occidente, se casó con la hija de un jefe galés del actual Caernarfon. Por su parte, el cristianismo fue introducido en Gales durante el siglo IV y la conversión no dejaría de extenderse.
En los siglos siguientes en el territorio de Gales se desarrollarían pequeños reinos como Gwynedd, Powys, Deheubarth, Glywysing y Gwent, que sucederían al gobierno imperial en las tierras altas. El desarrollo de esa cultura romano-británica fue de hecho la base de lo que en la actualidad se conoce como Gales. Con la pérdida de las tierras bajas, los reinos ingleses de Mercia, Northumbria y Wessex se enfrentaron a los de Powys, Gwent y Gwynedd para redefinir sus fronteras.

The native tribes of pre-Roman times occupied the present territory of Wales, but also parts of England and southern Scotland , in what became Roman province of Britannia until the withdrawal of the Roman legions in the early V century .
In South Wales formed a string of Roman forts , ensuring territorial control at least until Carmarthen , also extracting gold mines Dolaucothi in Carmarthenshire . The Romans also built a fort for their legions in Caerleon ( Isca Augusta ), the amphitheater is well preserved, as well as cities like Sale Silurum , with structures in good condition.
As reflected in the medieval tale Breuddwyd Macsen Wledig (The Dream of Macsen Wleding), the Romans also raided the north of the country. According to its plot Maximum Magno (Macsen Wledig), one of the last Roman emperors of the West, he married the daughter of a Welsh chief current Caernarfon . For his part, Christianity was introduced in Wales during the fourth century and the conversion would not be extended.
