Geoffrey Chaucer

Geoffrey Chaucer [‘ʤefɹi ‘ʧɔ:sə] (Londres, c. 1343 – ibídem, 25 de octubre de 1400), fue un escritor, filósofo, diplomático y poeta inglés, conocido sobre todo por ser autor de los Cuentos de Canterbury. Está considerado como el poeta inglés más importante de la Edad Media y fue el primero sepultado en el Rincón de los poetas de la Abadía de Westminster.

También alcanzó fama durante su vida como alquimista y astrónomo habiendo compuesto un tratado acerca del astrolabio dedicado a su hijo de diez años Lewis. Entre sus obras destacan El libro de la duquesa (The Book of the Duchess), la Casa de la fama (House of Fame), la Leyenda de las buenas mujeres (Legend of Good Women) y Troilo y Crésida (Troilus and Criseyde), pero Chaucer es conocido sobre todo por Los cuentos de Canterbury (The Canterbury Tales). Chaucer fue determinante en la legitimación de su vernáculo inglés medio en una época en la que los idiomas literarios dominantes en Inglaterra eran todavía el francés y el latín.

Geoffrey Chaucer [‘ʤefɹi’ ʧɔ: sə] ( London , . c 1343 – ibid , October 25 of 1400 ), was a writer , philosopher , diplomat and poet English , best known as the author of the Canterbury Tales . It is considered the poet most important of the English Middle Ages and was first buried in the Poets’ Corner of Westminster Abbey .

Also achieved fame during his lifetime as alchemist and astronomer having composed a treatise on the astrolabe dedicated to his ten year old son Lewis. His works include The Book of the Duchess (The Book of the Duchess), the House of Fame (House of Fame), the Legend of Good Women (Legend of Good Women) and Troilus and Cressida (Troilus and Criseyde) but Chaucer is best known for The Canterbury Tales (The Canterbury Tales). Chaucer was instrumental in legitimizing their vernacular Middle English at a time when the dominant literary languages in England were still French and Latin .
