Cover of the first edition of The Critic (1651) 1
The Critic is a novel by Baltasar Gracian published in three parts in 1651 , 1653 and 1657 . It is considered the masterpiece of its author and is one of the masterpieces of Spanish literature , By whom? next to Don Quixote and La Celestina . 2 The Critic incorporates and expands all his previous work as novelistic fiction . 3
The work takes the form of a great allegory that spans the life of man, represented in its two facets of impulsive and inexperienced, Andrenio (Greek ἀνήρ, ἀνδρως [aner, andros]: “male”, “man”); and wise and experienced Critilo (the κρίνειν Greek, κριτής or κριτικός [krinein, Krites or kritikos] respectively, “discern”, “judge”, “able to judge”). It is the literary work that summarizes the vision philosophical world Gracian in the form of a great epicmoral. In her invention and didacticism, erudition and personal style, disappointment and social satire are attached.
After his previous treaties, Gracian projects a fable work summarizing his thoughts and expand both its spectrum as creator. The novel was written in his years of full maturity and contains the final vision of the world and of human life. It is a bitter and desolate look, though his disappointment houses a hope in the two virtuosos protagonists, who escape to the ruling mediocrity reaching the eternal fame.
His style represents the quintessence of conceits , and is chaired by the brevity and semantic intensification of language. Emphasizes the use of antithesis and all kinds of puns with the abundance of sentences and maxims of origin worship or proverbs and sayings popular that suits their intentions adapting or transforming an original way.
The author constantly exhibits a perspectival technique that unfolds the vision of things according to the criteria or views of each of the characters, but so antithetical, not plural as in Cervantes . The novel reflects, however, a pessimistic view of society, with one of its better readers was identified, the German philosopher of the nineteenth Arthur Schopenhauer . 4Indeed the Criticón greatly influenced philosophers field Germanic , as quoted Schopenhauer or Friedrich Nietzsche , and has been its author as a precedent of existentialism .
Plot
A castaway, Critilo, experienced man, is thrown off the coast of the island of St. Helena , where he met Andrenio, the natural man, raised by an animal apart from civilization, and who Critilo taught to speak. Andrenio tells how he was born in a cave and closed after an earthquake, saw the light and beautiful nature, realizing that it could only be the work of the Supreme Artificer. They are rescued by a Spanish and together fleet begin a long allegorical pilgrimage at various stages in the Court of Spain, Aragon, France and Rome in search of Felisinda (happiness), desired wife Critilo and mother of Andrenio to the end of their Island life to achieve immortality.
Structure
The three parts of Criticón , published in 1651, 1653 and 1657, are a vast allegorical novel of philosophical character, this novel as fiction meets all the literary career of the author. The Critic combines didactic and moral fable metaphorical prose and thus, each “crisi” (chapter), houses a double if not more reading in real and philosophical levels. In her invention and teaching, scholarship and personal style, disappointment and social satire are attached.
In Part One, subtitled “In the spring of children and in the summer of youth”, the Critilo and Andrenio protagonists are, tell their life-stories that have led them to be known on the island of St. Helena and undertake trip Spain, beginning with the Court.
Part of The Critic (1653).
Second, it appears with the title of “courtly Judicious philosophy in the fall of manly age”, passes through the lands of Aragon and France. In Part Three, more simply titled “In the winter of old age” enter through the northern lands of Germany and end at the Mecca of the Christian pilgrim, Rome, to be announced to death and immortality reach across the waters ink of fame. The three volumes offer a structural balance in external remarkable. The first two parts are divided into thirteen “Crisi (s)” (chapters) each, and the third is twelve.
The content of the story is temporarily configured through a chronological axis comprising the life cycle of man, associated with the seasons, as shown outlined in the last chapter –Enhance XXV – for Discreet . This progresses linearly, but tour constant digressions and interruptions of the narrative. In these backwaters appear allegorical paintings where realizes a world of relationships between concepts and figures of fiction.
It seems certain that he had a preconceived scheme as there are features of a previous design in the Criticón to check the symmetry means that the start and end of the work happen in an island. 5 is the same thesis gathers Ricardo Senabre, 6 pointing Also the existence of structural principles based mainly in the antithesis . This is already present in the two central protagonists, Andrenio-Critilo, and runs all the work, from the different behaviors in certain situations have each of the protagonists, to the abundance of bimembres periods sentences and even the literary figure the anfibología . On the other hand, if we look at the themes that run through the work we find a recurrent contradiction between deception and disappointment, thematic axis that structures the entire narrative.
Finally, Correa Calderón , 7 considers that the Criticón is a series of allegorical pictures juxtaposed, constituting as a moral fantasies, linked only by the walking of its two protagonists in the manner of what happens in satirical books time, this El Diablo Cojuelo ofLuis Vélez de Guevara , thus adopting a structure of small independent allegorical modules strung on the thread of the way of the two pilgrims.
Besides allegory, to plot this work served cycle pilgrimage of Byzantine novel , and its construction episodic series for the multitude of twists and adventures experienced by characters and structure of picaresque novel by the satirical view society of its main characters, Critilo, sensible man who personifies disappointment, and Andrenio, natural man who represents innocence and primitive impulses.
